can the lens be replaced? if so, I have high stress acrylic at my disposal that will far outperform something as rigid as glass. It would be more heat/cold resistant as well. Thoughts please....

No bb impact. Just vibrations. You can change the lens? I might stick a plexiglass in there instead.

I works so I decided to keep it. But I am going real steel next summer.

But till then, is it possible to change it? How? Thing I should know before doing this? It's a 553 replica BTW.

Thanks.

Hot glue gun the edges and it will have less chance of cracking more.

I think you might be on to something here actually. I stripped down my 553 quickly this morning and discovered that the adjustment dials are connected to threaded rods that span the width of the unit - why: the reticle light source is physically moved L/R and U/D on these threaded rods. It appears that they were dumb enough to fix both ends - rather than have one end floating and a thrust bearing on the other end - so as you tighten/loosen them to their extremes they squeeze the glass putting a lot of stress on it. On my 553 the glass housing is just made of plastic so it will deform easily as those are tensioned.

Now I'm not sure if this is infact the case; the electronics were in the way so I couldn't get a really good look at things. If it is, hot gluing any edges won't do any good.

My 553 rear glass cracked out of the blue and it just recently had the front lense shot out so it might get torn apart here soon.

In terms of replacing the glass, I don't think it will be easy. All of the electronics will have to be removed and it looks like that won't be easy! Also, I'm not sure if plexi glass will work (or just any glass for that matter). It appears that the lenses are epoxied in place as I couldn't see any mounting brackets. Also, the reticle is reflected off the rear glass and is projected on to the front one - changing the glass and even thickness means changing the physical properties and how the light bounces around in there so I think finding a suitable replacement might be difficult. This reflecting to projection process is probably the reason they had (and still do) have problems with ghosting (ie. getting multiple reflections from the inside and outside edge of the rear lense).

Humm not sure about one thing. I think it works like a red dot. So just a projection on the front glass IMO.

Look through the rear lense and down slightly with it turned on; you can see reticle light source beneath the front lense and it's pointed up towards the rear lense. It's definately reflected off the rear lense first.

Well there is no way of taking out the glass itself. Why? Because it is like glued onto the holder. You cannot replace it with plexi glass or any other sorts of glass. These glass are coated polarized or something so the reticle of the LED light reflects off onto 2 lens. So, the only way is to find another replacement unit of a 552 and replace the lens but switching the inner units.

So for you 552 clone holders or any EoTech clone holders, careful with your up and down adjustments. Never over tighten anything, especially these clones as they are so fragile.

Yep, reflected off 2 lens. You need a pair as in a pair of boobies to see.

just to add to it, i have a cracked 553, not really noticble but... the thing that sucks most is the dot alignment. if i shift my head around my dot moves near 1cm on a target 10 ft away... that's huge. it's bad for aim.

where as my cheap ehobbyaisa RDS moves less then 1mm in the same situation.

seems the EOtech replicas are just for gun pr0n if you asked me. like expensive crack whores.
