Are you sure your not thinking of NiCd? My IB1400mAh packs, brand new, only charge to 1300-1350mAh. My 4200mAh packs only charge to 3900-4000mAh and their brand new as well. My used cheap tenergy NiMh pack is 3000mAh and held 2700 when new and is down to 2300ish since its been through about 50 cycles. All the NiCd's I've charged for people charge over the rated limit. Charged a local guys NiCd 600mAh pack for him recently and it charged to 750mAh before delta peaking. Using a Duratrax ICE with factory setting for peak sensitivity and such.

You are lucky. Are they touching each other metal to metal? This is the case where it will cause the pack to be unusable.

They both are supposed to charge at a higher capacity. Both Ni-Cd and Ni-Mh have a storage rate of 1.5:1. Means that in theory you have to charge your pack 1.5 times the capacity so it is completly full. A pack is almost never empty, so it can't be applied right like that. That is why we use negative delta peak detection systems. A full pack's voltage will start decreasing when it is fully charged.

As for your packs, I can only see one of the two following:

1-You got screwed. It is possible that some internet retailers are buying defective or low-end cells at a discount and then resell them full price. *keufkeufallkeufbatterykeufkeuf* If you bought your 4200mAh pack under 100$, then it probably is a low-end/defect one.

2-Your ICE is NOT properly set at factory. You have to change it everytime you change your memory setting. Set Peak detect at 9mV for Ni-Mh large packs, and 12mV for Ni-Cd large. For both mini, you can leave it at 5-6mV. All are mV/cell. It changes according to the internal resistance of the pack and charging current. You have to charge your 4200mAh pack at least at 4A, best is 5.5-6A. You might also want to use a very good quality power supply. If you don't have one, a good thing to do is to buy an alarm system lead battery and a charger (runs for about 30$ for both). Then charge it and use it as a power supply. It will create a more stable input and helps charging the batteries better. Just so you know, a computer power supply is an HUGLY power source. Voltage will vary from 11v to 13.5 and some times more. I does not matter what voltage you send in, just have to be very stable and constant.

funny this guy can put around 1460 mah into an 1500 cell when they are discharged to 7 V for at 9,6 pack

http://www.webx.dk/rc/elite1500.htm

oh my god they must be broken. his IB 1400 are the same they hold a litte less.

if you charge your batteries with 1/10 C or less and set the cut off more than 10 mv/c you can put as many Mah into a pack as you like since the charger wont shut down and the pack wont melt it will become maybe 30 degrees and then the rest of the energy will just dissappear as heat.

try to set your cut off to 3-5 mv/C and charge at 1 C then you will see the real capacity.

intellect batteries recommend a cut of of 5 mv/c so setting it to more may damage the pack. so you recommending a higher cut off will only make the pack hotter and increase the chance og breaking it.

Cycled my newest 4200mAh pack again (brand new, breaking it in) at 1C and a 7mV/C cut off. It took 4050mAh. Checked some R/C sites and had a chat with some of the competition R/C racers in the Ottawa/Gatineau area that my room mate is friends with and they all say 5-6mV/C cutoff for NiMh, 5 is best, 6 is okay, 7 is a tad high. Of course they also all charge their packs at 1.5C (6A for my pack size) and they do get 110-120% the listed capacity.
